You have been examined and observed at the accident and emergency department after suffering a head injury. We consider it appropriate to send you home, but you should not be alone for the next 24 hours.
Be aware
We recommend that you limit the following acitivities over the next few days:
Reading
Watching television
Playing computer and video games
Drinking alcohol
Playing sports where there is a risk of head injury
You will usually be signed off from scholl or work for a few days.
Normal symptoms during the first few days
Minor headaches
Nausea
Memory loss
Poor concentration levels
Tiredness
Dizziness
Rest and relaxation can often relieve these symptoms. You may take over-the-counter medicine in accordance with the instructions on the packet. For example, for adults: Two Paracetamol tablets four times a day. They can be named Pinex, Pamol or Panodil.
For children, according to their weight or in accordance with your general practitioners instructions.
A few patient find that their symptoms persist for several weeks. In this case we recommend visiting your general practitioner, who may refer you for a further check-up/examination at hospital.
We recommend that the patient is woken once or twice during the first night to check
Whether the patient wakes up as they normally would
Whether the patient is difficult to wake
Whether the patient is agressive
If you have any worries you can contact the emergency department in the first 24 hours after your discharge. Later than that you can contact the emergency doctor service (Phone no. 7011 3131)
It is okay to let the child sleep. You must keep an eye on him or her and make sure, that the child sleeps naturally. You need to control the childs condition and wake it up every second or third hour to make sure that it is okay.
The child needs to react naturally to your touch while it is sleeping. If you have any worries you can contact the emergency department in the first 24 hours after your discharge. Later than that you can contact the emergency doctor service (Phone no. 7011 3131).
If the child can not be comforted you also need to contact the emergency room or the emergency doctor service.
Be aware that babys and small childrens can not tell if they have a strong headache or nausea.
