A telescopic examination of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum can show changes in the mucous membrane such as infection or wounds.
The examination is conducted with a flexible telescope that is lead in through the mouth down the oesophagus to the stomach and duodenum. It is necessary to inflate the stomach with air, which may cause discomfort and pressure in the stomach. It is completely harmless. Tests can be taken from the mucous membrane, which is painless.
The examination will last approximately 5-10 minutes, though you must expect to spend time on preparation and information both before and after the examination.
Your stomach must be empty so the mucous membrane is visible.
If it is necessary during the examination to give medicine to help you relax or relive pain, you are not allowed to drive a car for 24 hours after the examination.
If you need local anaesthesia in your throat, you must not eat anything for 2 hours after your examination.
