Together with you we have agreed to start induction of labour with Misoprostol (Angusta).
About Misoprostol
But it also stimulates the uterus. For many years Misoprostol has therefore been used for induction of labour.
The hormone Misoprostol is given in tablets you have to swallow.
The purpose of the treatment is to shorten the cervical length and dilate the cervix to make it possible to rupture the membranes and release the amniotic fluid.
Typically, you will experience frequent, short and irregular contractions. This may continue for hours and then stop. In some cases, these weak contractions may develop into active labour.
Side-effects
Frequent contractions with no breaks (tetanic contractions)
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
Skin rash
Headache, dizziness
Fever.
It is very important that you take the medicine as prescribed to avoid that you get too many contractions without any breaks.
Induction of labour
The midwife will assess you and the fetal heart rate will be monitored for 20-30 minutes before starting the induction of labour process.
You take the first Misoprostol tablet at the ward and you bring the other tablets with you home with information on when to take the tablets.
Before you leave the hospital, you are scheduled for a new assessment by the midwife the next day.
It is important that you stop taking the pills and contact the maternity ward if you get contractions, the water breaks or if you experience bleeding or pain.
The midwife will perform a vaginal examination to see if the medicine has had the desired effect. The fetal heart rate will be monitored by CTG to ensure the fetus is well.
In case cervical maturation has not been achieved, the medical treatment is repeated for the next 24 hours.
It is important that you stop taking the pills and contact the maternity ward if you get contractions, the water breaks or if you experience bleeding or pain.
The midwife examines you and if it is still not possible to rupture the membranes, the midwife and a doctor plan the further course.
